What Are Xchange Points, Really? (A Worked Example)

What Are Xchange Points, Really? (A Worked Example)
Share:

"Xchange Points" sound like their own currency the first time you see them. They're not — once you see the dollar math, the concept is simple.

The Basic Definition

1 Xchange Point = 1% of a load's gross revenue. That's the whole definition. If a carrier agrees to a 7% dispatch fee, that's 7 Xchange Points. If a dispatcher offers another dispatcher 4% to collaborate on an opportunity, that's 4 Xchange Points. Points exist so the percentage being offered is visible upfront, before anyone has to ask.

Points vs. Rate

Points are the percentage. The Xchange Rate is what that percentage is actually worth once it's applied to a specific load's revenue.

Example:

  • Gross load revenue: $2,000
  • Xchange Points: 4 (4%)
  • Xchange Rate: $80

Points tell you the split. Rate tells you the dollar amount — the same math behind what dispatchers typically charge in general.

Where Points Show Up

  • A posted available truck shows "Available Points (Driver Dispatch Fee)" — the percentage a carrier is willing to pay a dispatcher for the load.
  • A co-dispatch opportunity on the Xchange Board is posted with the Points a second dispatcher is asking for in exchange for access to it.

A Full Worked Example

This is the same scenario covered in more depth in what is co-dispatching:

Dispatcher A has a carrier at a 7-Point (7%) agreement, but hasn't found the right load yet. Dispatcher B posts an opportunity for 4 Points that fits the truck. Dispatcher A accepts.

  • Carrier's dispatch fee: 7 Points — unchanged
  • Dispatcher B: 4 Points
  • Dispatcher A: 3 Points (what's left of the original 7)

On a $2,000 load, that 7% is $140 total, split $80 to Dispatcher B and $60 to Dispatcher A. The carrier still pays exactly what they agreed to — 7%, not 7% plus another 4% on top.

Points Aren't Mandatory

Posting a truck or a referral with Points attached just makes the terms visible before anyone has to ask. Co-dispatching is only one way to use the Xchange — plenty of members post trucks, work traditional dispatch clients, or use the Directory and Load Manager without ever splitting Points with anyone.
